It’s Catholic Schools week!
Posted in: uncategorized
It was always such a big deal in our house!! Open house at the school, tours of the building, spit shined and ready for the oohs and aahhhs of Mom, Dad and the family. There was the book fair to benefit the library and of course the ever-popular ice cream social. I celebrated 9 of them at St. Alphonsus School in Auburn, my kids were a part of 7 each at St. Josephs School in Penfield, 2 each at Siena Catholic Academy on East Ave and Mark observed 4 more at McQuaid Jesuit High School on Clinton Ave South.
Catholic School was a no-brainer for my parents, it was what sent my mother back to work when I was 6, it was also the reason I went back to the station full time when Marley hit kindergarten. I have been asked many times over the years why we chose that path for our kids. It’s simple really…we wanted to cement the bond between our kids and their Lord, so they know that God will carry them when the innocence of childhood evaporates in the real, sometimes brutal world of adulthood.
We wanted them to turn to God when the tumult of their teen years overwhelm them. We wanted them to lean on Jesus and know they can pray for and receive help when workplace pressures weigh them down; when relationships rock, teeter and crumble, when life’s hurts seem like bruises that may never heal.
We wanted our children to learn about the compassion and love that Jesus showed others so that they may be grow up to be healers, not hurters, in this world.
We knew the superb quality of education that lay behind the doors of a Catholic School, it’s still there. We were also aware of the strain on the family budget our commitment would make. We looked at it as an investment in the future, that of Mark and Marley and of the communities they would one day reside in. I have no regrets. We have 2 bright, beautiful college students on our hands. We could not be more proud of them and as I look back, I am so grateful that we were able to provide them with a strong Catholic Education. It’s a gift.
Boy do I ever miss that open house night, the ice cream social and the book fair. It’s happening this week all across the county. I may wander into St. Joe’s this week, they have tours on Wednesday. If you are curious, call the Catholic School in your neighborhood, hit the open house, have a bowl of ice cream and take in the sights and sounds of kids growing in mind, body and spirit!
