According to a new survey, 18- to 29-year-olds (otherwise known as “millennials” or “Generation Y”) lead the nation in getting tattoos.  Amazingly, 38 percent of “millennials” have at least one tattoo. While that isn’t a huge increase over the 32 percent of 30- to 46-year-olds who have ‘em, what makes the younger generation special is how many tattoos they get. 50 percent of all inked millennials have more than one tattoo — and 18 percent have more than five. On the other hand, among 30- to 46-year-olds with a tattoo, half only sport one and only 9 percent have more than five.

Personally, I’ve always considered tattoos as the economically challegned person’s way of investing in art, but it’s always fascinated me as to how someone could put a picture of something on their body that they wouldn’t ever hang in their living room. So, in order for me to learn, let me ask …

  • Do you have tattoos? How many? How many do you regret?
  • Anyone get a tattoo later in life? What inspired it?
  • Are your kids involved in something or have they done something that shocks you? How did they get into it? Who influenced them?

Train in the snow

Call me a nerd, a train “foamer” or whatever you want…but this video is cool. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a train clearing the snow off the tracks. Never even thought it was necessary. WHO KNEW?

I think Steve Hausman would be proud of this one:

Pan seared Tilapia with Roasted Broccoli

You’ll need:

2 crowns of broccoli

2 filets of tilapia

1 bottle black truffle oil from Wegmans (WORTH EVERY PENNY OF THE $10 IT COSTS)

1/2 cup of flour

Extra virgin olive oil and a Tablespoon of butter or margarine

Lemon pepper seasoning

Kosher salt and pepper

Garlic salt

  • Preheat oven to 350
  • Rinse and chop broccoli crowns into individual broccoli pieces
  • Arrange broccoli on cookie sheet, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle salt and pepper to taste.  Roast for 18-ish to 20 minutes.
  • While that roasts, go do something like watch CSI or Facebook for about five minutes so everything will finish at the same time.
  • Take large frying pan and place over medium high heat and let pan warm up to “screaming hot”
  • Combine the flour with a tablespoon of lemon pepper seasoning and a teaspoon garlic salt in a shallow bowl or plate.
  • Take a moment and think about how amazingly gourmet this will taste and how little effort you actually put into it.
  • Is the frying pan screaming hot?  Good…drizzle in about two tablespoons of olive oil and let it get as hot as the fourth layer of hell.
  • Take your tilapia (or salmon, or cod, or halibut, whatever) filet and dredge lightly in the flour mixture.  Shake off any extra.
  • Gently, GENTLY, lay down filets in the frying pan and let cook for 3-4 minutes until the cooked side is the color of a paper bag (Wegmans came up with that one, not me).
  • Flip, GENTLY SO YOU DON’T BURN YOURSELF, and cook another few minutes on the underside.
  • It should be nearly time for you to pull the broccoli…don’t do it just yet, let it hang out until the fish is done.
  • When the fish is finished, take that tablespoon of butter and plop it in the pan and let it melt…then, spoon the olive oil/tilapia/garlic/lemon pepper/butter goodness over the finishing fish.
  • Pull the broccoli and shake several drops of the black truffle oil.  You smell that?  THAT’S WHAT GOURMET SMELLS LIKE.

Plate.

Eat.

Admire.

Enjoy.

I made this for dinner tonight and it was the most delicious meal I have ever made.  EVER.

If you make this, let me know how it turns out for you!

Rochester Police officer Anthony DiPonzio has been nominated for a national award.  He is in the running for the “America’s Most Wanted” All-Star contest.

The competition is designed to honor emergency responders for their work and dedication to protect the community.  There will be eight finalists and the winner will receive $10,000.

DiPonzio was shot in the back of the head while he was responding to a call on Dayton Street in January 2009.   You can vote for Officer DiPonzio here.  You can vote for him once a day…every day…until April 11th.   One finalist is selected each week.

Good luck, Anthony!
